New York Police denied Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's request to see the site of the World Trade Center bombing, citing construction and security concerns. 2008 presidential hopefuls are jumping all over this to look tough on terror. Ahmadinejad has been accused of harboring terrorists, supporting attacks on US soldiers in Iraq, and secretly developing nuclear weapons. What's the big deal?
Gulliani's complaint is the most foolish: "he's a security threat." Ahmadinejad probably won't learn very many security secrets in an open pit of rubble that's been in construction for 6 years. And I hope he's not worried that Ahmadinejad is planning to bring a bomb himself. The Iranian president would probably be unlikely to give his life to explode a bomb in an unpopulated pit (granted, NJ runs a subway station in the pit still, but the casualty count would be very low). Besides, terrorism never sacrifices its leaders; it only requires sacrifices from the lower echelons.
Hillary says he doesn't deserve to see Ground Zero. This argument doesn't have enough merit to attack. Who deserves to see Ground Zero? Is there an admissions committee? She may mean that because he endorses this type of violence he shouldn't be allowed to see it. If he endorses this type of activity wouldn't this be a great opportunity to show him the suffering and the humanity involved? I don't know anyone who isn't touched by the stories of the civilians who were killed and the heroes who tried to rescue them. It may touch his heart. I'd say let him in.
I think we should let him see it. It's a breath-taking, heart-jerking experience that may inspire sympathy. Many killers talk big until they realize first-hand how ugly their deeds are.

Good posting. The only reason I would have for not allowing him to visit the site is the idea of not allowing him to use such a special place for his own disgusting political motives, but I guess we let are own politicians do it.
I would complain that posts like this are likely to get us on some kind of "terrorism sympathizers" list, but since we are already on the "communism sympathizers" list and we could use the extra traffic on the site, what the FICA.
Sorry about the change to the title, I saw the little pencil icon at the bottom of the page and couldn't resist. I know I just opened a can of worms. I propose that non-authors may only edit the title of an entry and that any changes must be made in all lower-case letters. See accompanying poll.
The new title is definitely more insightful. And who the FICA does Paul think he is, defending a terrorist? All terrorists should be shot in the face all the time and we should bill their mourners for the bullet.
