I think McCain does better against Obama for two reasons.
1. He doesn't know what he's doing. He's already made a bunch of political faux pas and those are likely to continue. Just counting the number of stupid mistakes his campaign has made, he's more likely to blow it than Hillary.
2. He doesn't court Florida or Ohio as well as Hillary.
I agree that Crist will be the VP. McCain is too hate-filled to pick Romney, even though the economy is the biggest issue right now and Romney pimps Wall St.
I'd like to see Rick Santorum, former senator who ran the Fed. Marriage Amend., but no one seems to be throwing his name around.

As for VPs, his age does make this more important than normal. My best guess is Chuck Crist.
The real question is who will be the new Apostle. I'll guess Bishop Burton or Elder Tingey.
