The news today is about the saddest thing I've heard in a long time. Oddly, it made me want to buy a gun.
I've never been passionate about this topic. It's one where the answer seems to be found in an empirical study, so it doesn't offer a lot of room for arguments. It's similar in that sense to the death penalty. With the death penalty we consider (a) what kills the fewest people, and (b) what's the cost? With gun policy it's what (a) kills the fewest people and (b) keeps the King of England (and Uncle Sam) out of our face. I think the (b) portion of this debate is declining in usefulness because our government has weapons that wouldn't slow down a second for any gun I could find at the Liquor & Gun Shops that are on every corner here in San Francisco.
But after the news today, I've been thinking about getting a gun to keep in my locked desk drawer here at work. It's a stressful place with plenty of angry people. Any thoughts on this? Or maybe a non-lethal defensive alternative? Or this crazy rant, generally?
